method One - What Will 2010 Look Like?

The 2009 formula One Season has come expected to an end. Jenson Button and Brawn Gp used their early season dominance to ride out a late charge from Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull. The quiz, now is what will happen in 2010.

With new designs, rules and budgets, the 2009 season was supposed to be the one that changed everything. Well, it was more of the same. The new designs didn't growth the passing. The excitement level of much of the season was so low that the battle in the middle of the teams and Fia was where the operation was until Renault admitted it has fixed a race! Once that was all resolved, the exit of teams such as Bmw and Toyota became the news. We now face a 2010 season that looks for all the world like a bare bones affair.

News From Bahrain

The 2010 season will be dominated by lineup issues. Arguably, there are only four teams that will be contentious - Ferrari, McLaren, Brawn and Red Bull. Depending on what day you check, there may be someone else 8 to 10 teams on the grid. Of those, a few will have decent pace, but most will be laggards. All indications are Ferrari will rise again. Red Bull looks solid, but McLaren and Brawn are in flux as the Mercedes move starts to occur.

So, what can we expect in 2010 from the race action? It is honestly difficult to say, but the season has all the indications of one in which a particular team dominates. Of the four top level teams, Red Bull seems to be in the best position. Sebastian Vettel is a dominant driver and the car is excellent. Brawn jettisoned two very good drivers for one, Nico Rosberg, who has never done a thing and someone else who has yet to be named. All and all, it is difficult to see how this is a safe bet move for the team. Ah, but what of the two old lions - Ferrari and McLaren?

Ferrari had a bad season in 2009. 2010 will be better, but how much good is difficult to say. Fernando Alonso is a great driver, but an even good car developer. That being said, the testing ban in formula One makes it difficult to fabricate a car in season. The 2009 car was so bad that the team has a long way to go before it can claim to truly be contentious again. Look Ferrari to advance, but not be dominant until 2011 at the earliest.

McLaren started off horribly in 2009, but ended very strong. The team has two big problems, however. The first is Jenson Button, the new second driver. Lewis Hamilton has shown that he doesn't play well with other contentious drivers, so the decision to bring in new World Champion Button is very risky to say the least. Perhaps a bigger problem is the fact Mercedes is leaving McLaren. McLaren may be okay in 2010, but there are likely to be problems at some point when the maker of your engines and drive trains are headed out the door.

So, what can we expect? As hard as it may be to imagine, look for Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull to take both championships. McLaren will come in second with Ferrari and Brawn fighting it out for third. Nico Rosberg will disappoint in the Brawn, while Fernando Alonso will give hints of what is to come in the Ferrari.
