The Naval Criminal Investigative assistance was formed in 1882, when it was part of the Office of Naval Intelligence. Primarily expensed with counter-intelligence missions, it was all the time largely civilian, though with some naval personnel. The Ncis has achieved some public recognition due to its appearance in the media, together with the Ncis television series on Cbs, mentions on the television series Jag, mention in the movie A Few Good Men, the book Rogue Warrior and others.

The Ncis is headquartered at the Washington Naval Yard, and field offices are located at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Nas Pensacola, Florida; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Camp Pendleton California; Norfolk Virginia; Newport Rhode Island; Puget Sound, Washington; San Diego, California; Mayport, Florida; and a mobile office. There are also field offices in Singapore; Yokosuka, Japan; Naples, Italy; and Bahrain. Many of these field offices also have smaller subject offices colse to their responsible region.
